Welcome yoga students

Ideally, a personal yoga practice should include a session of asanas (to increase body awareness, strength and flexibility), savasana (total relaxation of body and mind) and dhyãna (meditation to quiet the mind and clear the head). Only each individual can know for certain what is needed at any particular moment, and so choose the sequence of flowing from one pose to the next, or to indulge for a little longer in savasana or to just sit with calm mind and open heart.

The duration and depth of each session will vary depending on how you feel in the moment, the time of day and the demands of daily commitments. Some say variety is the spice of life; be willing to observe, listen and act (OLA) in response to your personal mood and abilities of the moment. Learn from the knowledge that what you did yesterday may not be what you need today.

Here are a few ideas to get you started or to remind you of the basics:

  • Wait about 2 hours after eating a light meal, longer after a heavier meal.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Take the time & find the space to practice.
  • Listen to your body & enjoy your breath.
  • Practice ahimsa, non-violence towards all of nature’s children, starting with yourself.
  • Warm up before stretching and cool down before returning to your regular routine.
  • Nurture your practice, daily if possible, & blossom!
  • If time is dear, then perform a warm up practice, if there is not time for that, then practice Savasanastill lacking time, take 5 minutes for meditation.
  • Monitor your progress…in baby steps!
  • Celebrate your successes.....
